I am only interested in paintings that are ‘things in themselves’: that have no purpose other than to be looked at. In my own work then, I seek to avoid any (or at least as many as possible) external references. The process is laborious and time consuming as all the sketching and experimentation is done on the one canvas, but the time and effort is worth it if the result looks spontaneous and fresh: paintings about the act of painting, trying to show what paint can do. To this end, in the last few years I have included passages of heavy impasto.
The main resonance I’m looking for from the viewer is the sense of the gestures being made anew before their eyes each time the picture is looked at.
