Lisa Traxler draws on both emotional and physical points of reference to construct a visual narrative across island landscapes. She works and reworks her ideas, paints and over-paints, layering and texturing. The tension in her work derives in part from experience of arriving and departing, from struggling with the unfamiliar and finding a language to embrace this. This in turn nourishes new, intimate ways of negotiating points of encounter and ways of seeing the island. The result is collision rather than simple experiment in colour and this unites both calm and unrest, continuity and rupture, a sense of secure and insecure locations, but surfaces in an ability to accept contradiction in her art. She has not only crossed the water, but she is painting the island, reinventing it and unfixing it to reveal unfamiliar topographies.
